Who needs a holiday weekend as an excuse for something fun to do? But as it turns out, since its Memorial Day, most people have a 3 day weekend and a lot of places have something special giong on, so why not get out and about. If you're shying away from the crowded beach scene and want to stick with something in the Philadelphia area, here is my list of the Top Five fun things to do this weekend, in no particular order.
1. Friday evening join Freddy Hill Farms in Lansdale for their First "Freddie's Family Fun Night" from 6pm to 10pm. All families playing miniature golf will receive a $1 discount per person. Play on Memorial Day, and lunch is on Freddie Hill Farms, as every paid mini golf player will receive a Free Hatfield Hot Dog! What kid doesn't enjoy a hot dog and Who can beat a free lunch? And since the lunch was free, farm hop over to Merry Mead Farms and grab a yummy ice cream cone. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Freddy Hill is open until 11pm, so the fun lasts longer!
2. There is always a lot to do at The Crayola Factory. Celebrate Memorial day by creating a red, white and blue tie, an early father's day gift perhaps? Get involved in National Physical Fitness and Sports month by writing an essay about your favorite activity to win a prize. And this exhibit sounds like something I'd even like to do, Crayola After Dark, paint on walls with light wands and make cool designs. But then again, give me a crayon and a coloring book with the kids and I'm off and coloring, even my husband gets in on the action! While you're there, stop over and enjoy the boats at the National Canal Museum, after all admission is included!
3. All the fun doesn't stop in Pennsylvania, hop over the bridge for one of our favoritee places, The Garden State Discovery Museum. Join the museum Saturday, May 29th through Monday, May 31st to celebrate Memorial Day with warm weather crafts and quiet fireworks set on the large screen in their Theater. They really do a great job here entertaining the kids with special events that take place almost every weekend.
4. Join the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia for their Teddy Bear Faire. The museum's very own Papa Bear leads you in a celebration of the joys of Spring while welcoming all the bears in hibernation to come out to play While you're there learn about "Pinch Bear" in a highly interactive show that runs 25 minutes and takes the children through the story of his journey to be more cute! The museum is open Saturday, Sunday and Monday, perfect if you are looking for something to do with the kids on Monday while school is out!
5. There seem to be some great things going on with farms this weekend and it's always nice to help out the local economy at the same time.
Johnson's Farms in New Jersey is holding their Strawberry Festival, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 3pm to 8 pm. Join them for live music, chicken and burgers on the grill, extended hay rides and much more! Don't forget to stop in the farm's store and pick up some great baked goods and ice cream. Finish off the day with a creamy Strawberry Shake and Cone. If you live in PA, this is worth the drive at less than a 30 minute hop over the Ben Franklin Bridge. They also have a great outdoor play place for kids!
Must be Strawberry Season as you can also join Shady Brook Farm in Yardley in their Strawberry Festival this weekend from 1pm to 4 pm. Complete with hayrides to pick your own Strawberries (sold by the pound) , crafts for the kids and Strawberry wine tasting for the adults, admission is free! Also don't forget about their Summer Wine Concert Series, every Friday until September 3rd from 3pm to 9pm. It's a family affair, relax on their back patio, enjoy the sounds of live music, wine tasting for the adults and playgrounds for the kids. Free Admission.
If you are feeling creative, there are some great websites with some great ideas for Memorials Day crafts for kids, my favorite is this hand wreath which, by changing the colors can actually be made for any season!

Do you know of something going on this weekend you think families would enjoy?
Let me know, I'll post it! I would love your input and comments!
Amidst all the celebrations it's a great day not to forget the meaning of this day and celebrate all the men and women who lost their lives fighting for our great country.
The National Constitution Center is celebrating Memorial Day by honoring the people and events of this nation's past. Learn about the history behind this nation's great monuments and why it is important to honor the people and events who make up our great history.
